REASON FOR PICK: The Wizards may have lost six straight games but they continue to battle hard. Since losing both Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler to season ending injuries, they've gone 2-1 ATS, taking the Nets (twice) and the Heat right down to the wire. Friday's game represents their best chance for victory in their final four contests. With that in mind, along with the fact that the Hawks are even worse off roster-wise, we'll lay the small number with the Wiz.
Eddie Jordan gave his bench significant minutes in Wednesday's loss against Miami. That was due to the fact that they were playing in a back-to-back situation, and he didn't want to burn out Antawn Jamison and Antonio Daniels, who had both played 40+ minutes the night previous. We expect to see the Wiz go back to a regular rotation, if you can call it that, on Friday night, and that should be enough to outlast the Hawks.
Atlanta has won just twice in its last 10 games, and those wins came against Milwaukee and Boston, two teams battling it out for the second worst record in the league in hopes of winning the draft lottery. It's tough to get excited about a Hawks squad that is without Joe Johnson, Josh Childress, Speedy Claxton, and Salim Stoudamire due to injury, and Josh Smith due to a team-imposed suspension. They managed to shoot 60% in their win over the Celtics on Tuesday, but don't count on a repeat performance on Friday. The Wizards have actually been playing some pretty solid defense since losing Arenas and Butler. On Wednesday they didn't allow a single Heat player to score 20 points.
With their remaining three games coming against playoff-bound or playoff-hungry opponents, the Wizards could certainly use a confidence boosting win on Friday night. It's interesting to note that Washington was favored by just 3.5 points in their last trip to Atlanta and that was with a healthy Arenas and Butler in the lineup. Could the oddsmakers be telling us something here? We'll leave that to the conspiracy theorists, but our money is on the Wizards. Take Washington.
