Corey Hirsch to help out Kapanen in Timrå

"It's a well known fact that Timrå's starting goalie Kimmo Kapanen has joint problems which makes him unable to play at times. According to Sundsvalls Tidning Timrå has signed Canadian goalie Corey Hirsch to back Kapanen up.

Hirsch is a very known goalie in Sweden. It was Hirsch that Peter Forsberg beat with his magical penalty shot in the 94 Lillehammer Olympics.
Hirsch played 4 games with the Dallas Stars last season and spent the rest of the season in the AHL with the Utah Grizzlies."

There is a break in the SEL now and Elite Prospects have some half time awards to give out to the players.

TOP 3 GOALIES
1. Fredrik Norrena, Linköping
Linköping finished last the previous season but now they are in fourth place. Norrena is behind a lot of Linköping's success and he is also currently leading all goalies with a 1.87 GAA.

2. Stefan Liv, HV 71
Liv has won many games for HV 71. He has a great saves percentage (.929) and should be a lock to make the Swedish WC-team later this season.

3. Björn Bjurling, Djurgården
There are several goalies that challenge rookie Björn Bjurling for the third place here but Bjurling's stands out a little bit more. He has from being a back-up become an established top goalie in the Swedish Elite League and perhaps also the front runner for the Rookie of the Year award.

TOP 3 DEFENSEMEN
1. Kalle Koskinen, Timrå
In many ways a very underrated defenseman. Koskinen plays solid defense but also contributes in a big way offensively, especially with his accurate passes.

2. Richard Lintner, Djurgården
Despite his 8-game suspension this season Lintner has been very important for Djurgården, just like everyone predicted. He has scored 11 goals and 5 assists in 22 games and is without a doubt the best offensive defenseman in the SEL. Lintner's defensive play which has been a big question mark in the past has also improved.

3. Per Gustafsson, HV 71
Veteran Per Gustafsson, 33, still got it. He is still dangerous offensively and plays very sacrifying in his own end. He blocks shots, he does the dirty work and is simply HV 71's MVP at D.

TOP 3 FORWARDS
1. Magnus Kahnberg, Frölunda
If there is no lock-out next season Kahnberg is likely to head off to the Carolina Hurricanes. He has been solid all season and scored goals on regular basis. He leads the league with his 20 goals in 31 games and is second with his 30 points. A very entertaining player to watch.

2. Mikael Lind, Brynäs
Lind has from being a face-off specialist and a team player in Timrå become a star with his new team Brynäs. In many ways a very complete player that deserves to get his chance with the national team Tre Kronor.

3. Pelle Prestberg, Färjestad
Prestberg had a great first season in the SEL (97/98) when he scored 44 points as a rookie. Since then Prestberg hasn't been putting up those huge numbers, until now that is. This season we are seeing the good old Prestberg with an excellent nose for the net. He leads the league with his 33 points.

TOP 3 ROOKIES
1. Björn Bjurling, Djurgården
He is our #3 ranked goalie so far this season so it's no big surprise that he tops this list. Bjurling has been very good for Djurgården and it looks now that he could end up winning the rookie of the year award.

2. Johan Fransson, Luleå
18-year old Fransson, who opted out of the draft this summer, has surprised a lot of people by becoming a regular with Luleå. A top prospect for sure that has seen quality ice-time in the SEL this season and a potential first rounder in the draft next summer. Fransson will be a very important player for the Swedish junior team in the upcoming World Junior Championships.

3. Johan Backlund, Leksand
Another talented goalie. Backlund quite early stole the starting job from the more experienced Mike Bales in Leksand. While his stats haven't been that impressive he has been very good for Leksand. Lately Bales has however started some games for Leksand and played outstanding.
