One of the most popular football leagues in the world, La Primera Division continues with its 22nd round this weekend, offering several great games including the long-awaited blockbuster FC Barcelona – Atlético Madrid. Well aware of this favourable record and their current form, the reigning Spanish champions are sure to go all-out for a victory in the Saturday game.

Atlético Madrid

Last year, Atlético ended up in the 3rd place, which was certainly considered a success but for most of the season, they could hardly compete with Barcelona and Real. This time around, however, Atlético have been doing much better in this regard. 21 rounds into the season, the team boast an impressive score of 15 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses. Madrid may not produce as crushing victories as Barcelona but their recent results have been admirable as well. Out of the last ten league games, Atlético won eight. Yet, the very last match did not turn out well for the Colchoneros as they were held to a goalless draw against Sevilla, consequently loosing the top spot. One of the things that the team´s coach Simeone could appreciate in this match was the fact that his side produced another clean sheet. In fact, Atlético have only conceded 8 goals in the season, which is by far the smallest number in the league. Nevertheless, as reliable as the team´s defence seems to be, preventing the feared Barca´s attacking trio Messi – Suárez – Neymar from scoring is an extremely daunting task that no defender wants to face.

Skutkiem tego jest też oczywiście największa liczba straconych bramek w całej lidze, tym niemniej stylu ekipy Paco Jemeza po prostu nie da się nie lubić. Ostatnio stołeczni notują nieco lepszy okres, gdyż wygrali w domu z Celtą Vigo 3:0 oraz zremisowali z mocnymi ekipami Valencii i Realu Socedad w obu przypadkach 2:2. Już choćby z analizy powyższych wyników można spodziewać się, iż przyjezdni strzelą dziś co najmniej jedną bramkę. Będzie o to o tyle łatwiej, że w szeregach gospodarzy nie zobaczymy nominalnie podstawowego bramkarza Germana Luxa, który pauzuje za kartki. Jego zastępcą prawdopodobnie będzie Stipe Pletikosa, który ostatni, oficjalny mecz rozegrał w czerwcu ubiegłego roku. Co do Deportivo to miejscowi spisują się co najmniej solidnie. Gwiazdą drużyny jest Lucas Perez, który już trzynastokrotnie zaskakiwał bramkarzy rywali w obecnym sezonie ligowym. W mojej ocenie mając na uwadze potencjał ofensywny obu drużyn zobaczymy co najmniej trzy bramki, a i 4, 5 lub więcej goli również wykluczyć nie można.

Zapowiada się bardzo zacięte spotkanie. Obie drużyny balansują nad strefą spadkową - Espanyol ma jeden punkt przewagi nad osiemnastym Las Palmas, zaś Real Sociedad zaledwie 3 punkty. The visitors are currently sitting in the seventh spot but their performance has been very unconvincing in the last couple of matches, which suggests they should be an easy target for the reigning Spanish champions. Starting at 8:30 PM (CET), the Sunday La Liga duel FC Barcelona vs. Celta Vigo will be played at the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona.

Barcelona have been in a great shape lately. On Sunday, the Catalans will take on Celta Vigo who are a team that Barca have a lot to avenge. In the fifth round, Vigo surprisingly triumphed over the Spanish champions 4:1. As it was one of just two defeats they have suffered in the season, Barca are determined to strike back and claim a victory in the upcoming match.

Celta Vigo

Last year, Celta Vigo finished in the 8th place and at the beginning of the season, it seemed they could do even better this time around. Until the 16th round, Vigo were chasing the very top La Liga sides, sitting in the European cups spots but then, their performance dropped significantly. Out of the last seven league games, Celta managed to pick up just one victory, slipping down into the seventh place. During this undesired series of failures, this Galician team even lost to some of the relegation-threatened sides such as Vallecano (0:3) or Las Palmas (1:2). Celta seem to have particularly big problems with their defence as they failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the last seven matches. Considering the enormous productivity of Barca´s feared attacking trio Messi – Neymar – Suárez, it would be a real shocker if they did not concede any goals in the Sunday game. In fact, Celta will be clear underdogs of the match and any other outcome but a crushing victory of the Catalans will be a surprise.

On Sunday, Barcelona will face another opponent in their quest for the La Liga title as they will host ailing but still quite well-positioned Celta Vigo. Looking to extend their unique unbeaten series to 29 games in row, Barca are expected to prevail in this fixture but Vigo have already managed to beat them this season. After a tough and exhausting Champions League battle at AS Roma, Real will be in for another challenging duel as they will travel to Malaga to claim a win and hopefully reduce the Catalans´ lead at the top of the table. Starting at 4 PM (CET), the La Liga duel Malaga FC vs. Real Madrid will be played at the La Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga.

Malaga CF

Last year, Malaga finished in the ninth spot in La Liga and they have been occupying the middle of the table this year as well. After 24 matches, the team have a score of 8 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses, which currently puts them in the 11th place. But Malaga still have a lot to play for. The last spot to secure a place in European tournaments (currently occupied by Eibar) is within a reach of just two wins for the Albicesteles. In their last league game, Gracia´s men lost to Villarreal (0:1) but they picked up two victories in the previous matches against Getafe (3:0) and Eibar (2:1) and they also gave a decent performance against Barcelona to whom they lost just 1:2. In fact, Malaga have been quite successful against the top Spanish sides in general. In the 16th round, for example, they gained a surprising victory over Atlético and they also produced a valued goalless draw at Real in the first head-to-head game of the season. This time, however, Real are in a need of securing a win to keep in touch with Barcelona and they will surely do their utmost to meet this goal.

Real Madrid

Real seem to have overcome the issue with unstable form they were struggling with recently and they bounced back to winning. Out of the last nine league duels, Madrid won seven, which appears to be a great score but in fact, it is not good enough because Barcelona, Madrid´s biggest rivals, have been even more successful in their matches. Consequently, Los Blancos are now as many as seven points adrift of Barca. Moreover, Atlético also joined the contention for the title, currently placed second, one point ahead of Real. Therefore, Zidane´s squad are under pressure to gain as many points as possible in the remaining matches and they still have to wait for their rivals´ potential slip-ups. Chasing the top teams in La Liga is not the only task Real have been dealing with though. They are also looking to succeed in the Champions League where they already have one foot in the quarter-final after they earned a 2:0 win at AS Roma in the first round of 16 leg. Yet, as strenuous as the match was, Real have no time to rest as they will need to gain another victory in their Sunday game against Malaga.
