"SWISS ICEHOCKEY DNA PREVIEW 2005/2006
Lugano
After the disappointing result of last season, out already in the playoff quarter finals after the first place in the regular season, this is the season of the revenge for the always ambitious Lugano. Canadian Glenn Metropolit is the best market move of Lugano, but also finnish Hentunen and Swiss national player Wirtz are not to be underrated. Lugano is still in search of the 5th allowed foreign player like other team, because only two weeks ago they decided to leave free one of the most enjoyed player of the fans Mike Maneluk. Also the fans complained about a pretty too quite market summer. Lugano team seems really competitive in the offense with great fire power players like the already mentioned Metropolit and Nummelin, but the defence looks not reliable as in the past years. I don't expect them this year to be the best defensive side of the league, like last year.
Lugano -> 2-5 place
Ambrì Piotta
The little side of Leventina has more ambitious goal this season than the last: they want to reach at least the semifinals. I doubt they can do it, but I really liked how they played in the friendlies as they seemed already a team. Many thinks they will have even difficulties to reach the playoffs, but if they keep play like in the preseason they should not have much problem. Last year they had many injury worries and they had really luck to qualify at the end of the season, in the last game, for the playoffs.
Again Ambri will count really much on the foreign players. Trudel, Domenichelli are confirmed after two really fine season in Ambri and also Toms is still there; the two new foreign face are Korhonen and Somervuori, two finnish. Ambri never failed to choose the right foreing and the two finnish already showed some really good performance. Cereda come back in Ambri after a disappointing season in Bern and if he find back some confidance he can be a really dangerous player. Only worry is that the defence seems a little bit short and the best player will have probably to do much extrawork this year and injury worries in this case can be a real problem.
Ambri prediction -> 6-8 place
Langnau Tigers
After a really difficult season last year: many money spent and really bad results (out of the playoff), Langnau decided to tighten the budget and to be less ambitious this year. The goal is to enter the playoffs. But the season already started very bad: 6-7 players will be out this weekend and among them some for really long time. 17 players went away from Langnau and they were not all replaced by players of the same quality. They chaged all the foreign players, so you can understand this a team that is all to be invented and has to find continuity, but with such injury worries it will not be easy. Like Ambri with Domenichelli and Trudel, they will rely their hope for the playoff qualification on two ex-AHL leaders, but I doubt they will do it.
Langnau -> 8-10 place
Zsc Lions
Probably the most ambitious team of the league, with the opening of the new restored stadium the expectation are really high. Win the swiss championship is their goal, but they lost their two best player of last year season: Luke Robitaille and best Swiss player Mark Streit, both are now in the NHL. But this doesn't mean the team is weaker than last year, because they bought really talented player like Blindenbacher, Forster, Wichser, Steiner and two really good foreing player like McTavish and Karlberg. They still miss the fifth foreing player and they are looking around to find one.
The things didn't went that good in the preseason match, as the trainer Weber didn't find already a way to make the players play good togheter and probably it will not be easy without player like Streit and Robitaille. It's possible a slow start of the season. Anyway anything else than a great season from the Lions would be a really surprise.
ZSC Lions -> 1-3 place
Davos
Past year champions were really in trouble this summer with really bad results from the preseason games, but this is not a surprise for me. How is possible to replace player like Thornton, Nash and Hagmann? Probably it is, but not in the short term, anyway 4 new foreing players are at Davos for this season and are completed by the really solid Mahra. Davos this year will not expect that much from the foreing like last year and they will probably count more on the collective and routine, thanks to the really good trainer Del Curto (since 10 years at Davos!) and the Swiss leader Reto Von Arx. Possible a slow start of the season.
Another really competitive season, but a chance of a back to back swiss champions title are not high.
Davos -> 3-5 place
Geneve Servette
The american investors group decided to go away from Geneve last year and now the trainer is one of the shareholders (!) of the team. The budget for this year season is the most little of the league, but doesn't mean they are the weakest side of the league.
McSorley, the trainer, decided to build a high muscle team, with players like "the beast" Sarrault, Bezina, Breitbach, Snell, Gobbi. This will probably mean they will be one of the most penalyzed hit team of the league, as players like Sarrault and the other foreign Grozek are probably among the most nervous and indisciplinate players of the league. The addiction of the 42 years old Shiriajev make the defence pretty solid and is all composed by Swiss players.
The goal is to do better than last year, but I see it really difficult; the team is not bad at all, but I don't see them competing with the best teams of the league.
Geneve Servette: 6-9 place
Bern
With Lugano and Zürich is among the most ambitious team of the league. The title is their goal and after the disappointing semifinal playoff loss of the last season, they will try to bounce back this season.
Bern is the team with the most number of spectator for match of Europe (around 14000 a match) and as you can understand from this stats is one of the most difficult team to break at home.
They have a bounch of really good veteran Swiss players, but they will rely heavely on the performance of the foreign players, especially Eric Perrin, 29 years ex-Nhl player. After last year defence problem the team seems more disciplinate and stable and with ZSC the team seems the most complete one, difficult to find weakness in the roster.
With Zsc, Bern is the favourite for the title for me.
Bern -> 1-3 position
Ev Zug
After last year really good result (playoff semifinal) their goal is to repeat this result and the roster seems good enough to do it.
The leader of the team is expected to be like last year the great russian player Oleg Petrov, that with the addiction of Mike Maneluk (but his fitness is always a question mark) seems to me as one of the best fire power double of the league. Paul Di Pietro came also back to Zug now as a Swiss (new passport) and will try to rebuild the great ex-Ambri double with Petrov. The roster looks really solid, good keeper Weibel, talented young Swiss players and many experienced player, not probably enough to compete until the end for the title, but the goal of the playoff semifinals seems more than affordable.
Zug -> 4-6 position
Basel
The new promoted side will more than probably have hard life in the new series, they had little time to move in the market and the jump of category is pretty huge. What is certain is that they have a really good trainer, or better a winner (already two Swiss champions title in his palmares), Ruhnke, and what should be a really solid defence. Some good experienced players are now in the team and this will certainly help them, but this will in my opinion not be enough for the playoff. Especially the attack looks weak, with many players to discover and foreign players who are not really clear if they will fit good togheter and be productive enough to assure the team, good and costant results.
Basel -> 10-12 position
Fribourg
Another team who want to try to bounce back after a disappointing season (out of the playoff) is Fribourg, but it will really be a tough job for team, because replacing players like Karlberg, Hentunen and Wirz in an already pretty weak team is something really difficult. 4 new foreing players are now in the roster of Fribourg and all of them from the finnish championship, among them Hyvönen claimed to be the player with the fastest shoot of Europe. Although the change in the roster, Fribourg seems like last year an attacking team with great defence problems. Keeper Mona can not do miracle from september to april and it will be difficult not to see them taking many goals this season and the friendlies already pointed out that, 8 goals conceded to Zug is really too much.
Fribourg looks like one of the team that will fight for the playoff until the last match, but I doubt they will able to do it.
Fribourg -> 8-11 position
Kloten Flyers
Now or never this season. Or they will reach at least the quarter finals or even better the semi-finals, or Kloten Flyers will disappear. Pretty much extreme but this seems the situation at Kloten. They can no more afford a disappointing season, after they money the spent in the last season.
Marcel Jenni is back from Sweden and looks one of the main addiction of the team, although I didnt' like him when he played for the Swiss national team in the world cup, and should take the place of the leader of the team.
The team will rely heavely on the foreing players and the young talented Swiss keeper Stephan (next year in the NHL).
Difficult to judge the team, the foreign players look more than ok, but what worries more is how costant can the Swiss young players be trough the long season. Kloten young players are really talented but this do or die objective can put really high pressure on them, don't know how this will affect them.
Kloten -> 7-9 position
Rapperswill Lakers
New trainer for Rapperswill and also a new name with the addiction of that "Lakers". A beginning of a new era? Not really, the trainer is really good, Bill Gilligan, but the goal is always the same: a good season and a qualification in the playoffs. Rapperswill is always knowed for their fast start and slow finish and last year they were leading the regural season after 4 weeks and risked at the end even not to enter in the playoff.
After few preparation week they lost for an injury the foreign Eloranta, but they bought the talented 25 years Christian Berglund, that should provide many goals and assist, but also some penalty minutes. Also the really good Roest is still there and this will be of great help.
The roster looks more than average and with the new trainer probably they will play better togheter than before and the defence looks solid enough to put them in the playoff zone during the regular season.
Rapperswill Lakers -> 6-9 position
The season preview is finished, I hope it will help you. Good season to all of you."
