We suffered a frustrating 6* loss between these teams last night, with a handicap based on San Diego getting to Orlando Hernandez going out the window, after he had to leave having thrown only four pitches in the third inning. And an implosion by what had been a solid bullpen took away any chance to compete in the late innings. But if there was a silver lining to that dark cloud it is a chance to get some of that money back at a nice underdog price in this one.

The last thing that Arizona needed the night before Juan Cruz pitches was to have the bullpen get extended, and that is exactly what happened. Five different relievers were needed to go seven full innings, and this was after three different relievers worked four innings in the series opener on Monday as well. Cruz began the season in the bullpen and was forced into the rotation more by necessity than merit. He has been limited to five innings in each of his first three starts, and the fact that it took him 95 pitches to complete those five innings at St. Louis on Friday may already have him a bit off of his game. Now the rotation behind him is severely limited, with Brandon Medders and Jose Valverde unlikely to be available here after working in each game, and Jason Grimsley reaching a pitch count last night that will absolutely rule him out. It makes for a long night of juggling for Bob Melvin.

The Padres also have to reach a little deeper tonight, with Mike Thompson being called up to make his Major League debut to replace the injured Woody Williams, but Thompson’s form has been excellent, and he is in much better condition to burn innings than Cruz. After going 4-2/3.15 when elevated to AAA Portland LY, Thompson opened 5-0/3.70 this time around, with an excellent ratio of 31 strikeouts vs. eight walks in 41.1 innings. That means that he brings some rhythm to the table, and a pitcher up from the minor’s with that kind of form can have a big advantage in the first look vs. an opponent, since the hitters do not have any kind of scouting report. Meanwhile Bruce Bochy rolled the dice with some of his lesser relievers last night and paid the price, but that saves his best arms for the late stages of this one, and creates a big advantage for the Padres at crunch time.
