Ciężar NBA przeniósł się zdecydowanie do Konferencji Zachodniej. Głównie dzięki Lakersom, ale nie tylko. Sacramento znalazło się na szczycie, dla tego zespołu kluczowe było odnowienie kontraktu z Chrisem Webberem. Dołączył do nich zespół z Dallas, głównie dzięki świetnemu, wyrównanemu składowi.

Jeśli tylko Shaq będzie zdrowy, to walka o mistrzostwo sprowadzi się do rywalizacji Lakers i Mavericks. I Lakers wygrają. Nie sądzę, by Kings byli już gotowi do walki o mistrzostwo i wygrania z Lakers w serii play off. To jest ciągle drużyna na dorobku. Niedawno oglądałem ich w meczu z Lakers i zostali rozbici. Co prawda Chris Webber jest naprawdę dobry, a drużyna gra doskonale pod wodzą Mike'a Bibby'ego. To było zresztą najlepsze posunięcie Kings - sprowadzenie Bibby'ego i pozbycie się tego wytatuowanego dzieciaka [Jasona Williamsa - przyp. red.]. Trafił do Memphis i to jest dla niego dobre miejsce. Potrzeba im z 15 lat, by zbudować porządną drużynę.

Na Wschodzie stare potęgi - New York Knicks, Miami Heat - praktycznie się rozpadły. Będą potrzebowały paru lat na odrodzenie. I pojawiły się nowe zespoły, ale chyba w najbliższym czasie nie będą w stanie rywalizować z zespołami z Zachodu.

Obecnie trzy najlepsze drużyny tej Konferencji to New Jersey, Boston i Detroit. Ale równocześnie są to też zespoły najmniej doświadczone w play off. To jeszcze nie będzie rok Celtics. Myślę, że przejdą pierwszą rundę i chyba, niestety, odpadną w drugiej. Walka o pierwsze miejsce w Konferencji rozegra się między Philadelphia 76ers i New Jersey Nets. Jason Kidd jest w tym sezonie po prostu rewelacyjny. Stawiam na zespół Philadelphii, jeśli tylko Allenowi Iversonowi nie będzie zbytnio przeszkadzała kontuzja nadgarstka.

Najciekawiej zapowiada się konfrontacja Los Angeles Lakers z Portland Trail Blazers na Zachodzie oraz Boston Celtics z Philadelphia 76ers w Konferencji Wschodniej.

Pierwsze mecze play off odbędą się w sobotę, a pierwsza runda zakończy się najpóźniej 3 maja.

Gospodarzami pierwszych dwóch spotkań będzie zespół wyżej rozstawiony, mecz trzeci i czwarty (jeśli będzie konieczny) odbędzie się w hali drużyny, która zajęła niższe miejsce w konferencji. Na decydujący mecz ekipy wrócą do hali drużyny rozstawionej z wyższym numerem.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

No. 8 Pacers vs. No. 1 Nets
The Pacers used everything in the tank to make it to the postseason for the fifth straight year. The Nets will run them first out of Continental Airlines arena in two games and then one at Conseco for the series sweep. In fact, I don't think New Jersey will even have to subject itself to the half-court, grind-it-out mentality that is the benchmark of most NBA postseason games. They should play catch-us-if-you-can on offense and work like gnats on defense to make easy work of Indy.

No. 7 Raptors vs. No. 2 Pistons
See what team ball can do? For the Raptors, it brought them back from the grave (a 13-game losing streak and no Vince Carter). For the Pistons, it meant 50 wins in Rick Carlisle's first season at the helm after 50 losses last season. The Pistons will take this series in five because 1) they have home court, and 2) they have a star in Jerry Stackhouse who has decided to shoot less and pass more but can still take the big shot in the crunch and make it from anywhere on the wood.

No. 6 76ers vs. No. 3 Celtics
Antoine Walker will be big in this series. Paul Pierce will be big in this series. Allen Iverson will be bigger than both (at 5-foot-11 5/8) if he can play at 80 to 95 percent. Remember, it's his non-shooting hand that is injured, so Ive can jack up 38 shots if needed. Now, will eight of those shots go in or will 20? If the average is eight, the Celtics will move on in four. If the latter occurs, the defending Eastern Conference champs will live to fight another day.

No. 5 Magic vs. No. 4 Hornets
It doesn't matter where the Hornets play. In fact, they were better on the road this season, winning two more games away from the Hive (if you can call that home) than in it. This series isn't about where the games are played but who will be playing in them. With all due respect to Monty Williams and friends, if Tracy McGrady's back isn't ready to roll and if Mike Miller can't give quality minutes, then the New Orleans, I mean, Charlotte Hornets will advance.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

No. 8 Jazz vs. No. 1 Kings
Age will not precede beauty in this case. The Jazz might pick and roll their way to one or two wins, but the Kings just keep coming and coming and coming. Sure, they want you to score fast so they can score faster, but they can run the Jazz out of the gym with athleticism, shooting and depth. The Kings remember the knock-down, drag-out first-round series from 1999. Payback is the only way back.

No. 7 Sonics vs. No. 2 Spurs
This will be a five-game battle because the Sonics pose serious matchup problems in the backcourt and on the wings. Seattle has great shooters as does San Antonio, but the Sonics are either more athletic or more experienced with Desmond Mason, Brent Barry, Gary Payton and Rashard Lewis (when he's healthy). Tim Duncan will be the difference. The MVP candidate will toss out double-double after double-double, while Vin Baker and the international big boys wonder in amazement at the assortment of moves from Duncan.

No. 6 Trail Blazers vs. No. 3 Lakers
Here we go again. If Robert Horry and his ribs can go, the Lakers will be at full strength and the Blazers will be out of luck again. I'm not sure if this will be a quickie or a five-gamer because I don't know if the Lakers want to build to the title or come out of their corner swinging. The Blazers better bring their hack-a-Shaq manuals because the triangle offense will be in full effect. Shaq will touch the ball first, and Portland better get him to the line (where his percentage has gone up over four percentage points) quick because he'll still be going to the line to cap a three-point play. Ouch. Lakers in four.

No. 5 Timberwolves vs. No. 4 Mavericks
So what will be the over/under in each game of this series -- 230? The T'Wolves and the Mavs will be totally exempt from postseason etiquette. Don Nelson recently said that scorers worry just about that --scoring. Dallas will play zone. Minnesota will play zone. May the best shooters win. I love the passion and power with which Kevin Garnett plays the game, so it would be nice to see him advance. I just think the Mavs have more scorers to put on the floor. Anthony Peeler will tie you up in knots if you don't get a hand in his face beyond the arc. Four games -- the Mavs Dancers (the Association's best) will boogie another day.
