Detroit Gets Cash Back - Shock Re-sign All-Star Forward To Three-Year Deal


AUBURN HILLS, MI - February 24, 2005 - Detroit Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer announced today that the franchise has re-signed its All-Star forward, 2004 USA Basketball Olympic Gold Medal Winner and team captain Swin Cash to a three-year contract. Cash was the Shock’s leading scorer last season averaging 16.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 32 games.
“Swin has proven herself to be a franchise player,” Laimbeer said. “She has the rare combination of ability and heart that makes her a very special player in this league. With Cash signed long-term, the Shock will be a major competitor in the Eastern Conference for years to come.”

Cash – a two-time WNBA All-Second Team member and 2003 WNBA All-Star – is Detroit’s all-time franchise leader in scoring (1,548 points) and assists (340 assists). In 2004, she became one of only five women to have won an NCAA Championship, a WNBA Championship and an Olympic Gold Medal. Cash was the only player in the WNBA last season to average 16 or more points, six or more rebounds and four or more assists. She scored 20 or more points nine times and ranked eighth in the league in field goal percentage (46.9%, 180-384 FGs). Cash also ranks second in franchise history in blocked shots with 83 and fourth in double-doubles with 11.

“I am excited to have re-signed with the Shock for the next three years. The organization’s support has been impeccable since they drafted me in 2002,” Cash said. I want to especially thank the fans of Detroit for embracing me as one of their own. My commitment to Detroit is not only to help bring championships but also to help inspire our young men and women. The last six months of my life have been filled with adversity, but through a lot of prayer, hard work, and support from my family I will be mentally and physically ready for this upcoming year. For me this season is personal.”

2005 Shock home opener: The Detroit Shock will face Nykesha Sales, Taj McWilliams-Franklin, Lindsay Whalen and the 2004 Eastern Conference Champion Connecticut Sun on Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. at The Palace.
